What to know

Clear information beats download claims that cannot be checked.

Official framework

The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 (Act No. 32 of 2025) defines “online money game” to cover online games played by paying fees, depositing money or other stakes in expectation of monetary or other enrichment, irrespective of skill or chance (with the Act’s stated exception). Sections 5–7 address offering/facilitating such games, advertising and payment facilitation. Read the Act itself and any current Gazette notifications before drawing conclusions.

Commencement and 2026 Rules

The Act text states that it commences on a date appointed by Central Government notification. India’s Press Information Bureau reported that the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules, 2026 came into force on 1 May 2026. The PIB backgrounder describes classification, registration and user-safety processes. This page is not a substitute for the gazetted Act, rules or orders.

Google Play policy is separate

Google Play’s policy describes conditions for eligible licensed gambling apps in permitted countries and prohibits other apps that facilitate real-money wagering for real-world monetary value. Store policy is not legal advice and does not determine whether a particular app complies with Indian law.

For app publishers and readers

A free-to-install app can still include features involving stakes or value. Conversely, the phrase “Teen Patti” alone does not establish a legal classification. Assess actual product mechanics, monetisation, location restrictions and current applicable law with a qualified Indian lawyer.
